How Today’s Universities of Arts Answer the Question: What is Humanities?

What is humanities? It’s a common question. Humanities are the academic disciplines studying the human condition, past, present and future. They are not so much historical studies as they are analytical or speculative.

Universities of Arts teach the subjects using the arts including music, languages, literature, philosophy, religion, visual and performing arts. Through analyzing all these various forms of human expression we come to better understand humanity, and precisely what is humanities. The social studies aspect of the subject includes technology, archeology, law and cultural studies.

There has been some ongoing academic debate regarding exactly what is humanities, and its relevance in preparing students for the work place. Universities of Arts continue to ascertain their value and importance, even in preparation for the work place. 

Students charting their career course may wonder what is humanities, and if it is worth their effort in study. An argument made for the studies is that there is a timelessness to humanities. This is because you are not studying a specific theory or specialized technique, which, even after a tremendous investment of time and effort, can quickly become outdated. Instead, these studies are always going to have value to humanity, and bring insight to the human condition.

In learning how to understand, analyze, apply knowledge, gain insight, think logically, and reach beyond the obvious students increase their aptitude and ability to perform in any field. This study of the human condition and what it means to be human is truly fascinating, even though a complete and final answer of what the “human condition” is cannot ever be given.
